Dwight J. "Whitey" Wyngarden, the oldest child of Gerrit Wyngarden and Hattie Bowman Wyngarden, was born on August 28, 1917 and died March 27, 2015 at the age of 97.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Rev. Dianne Wyngarden Mugg and Wallace Mugg. His grandchildren, Thomas and Monique Mugg, Sarah and Scott Bosma, Stephen and Lisa M. Mugg, and Rachel Mugg and Trey Andrews. Great grandchildren, Thompson, Theodore Dwight, Elise Mugg and Dalton and Ryleigh Hyma. Noah, Naomi, Cameron and Mallory Bosma. Anderson, Amelie and Prescott Mugg. His sister Norma Raterink, sister-in-law Joyce Plewes and many nieces and nephews. His wife of 65 years, Dorothy Plewes Wyngarden, preceded him in death in 2003.
Dwight, a lifelong resident of Zeeland, graduated from Zeeland High School in 1936. He was an avid sports fan and played football, basketball and baseball for the Chix earning him a baseball tryout with the St Louis Cardinals. During the 1930's and 40's Dwight owned and managed the semiprofessional baseball team, The Zeeland Chix. For 50 years, he served as the official scorekeeper and announcer for Zeeland High boys' basketball games. He also announced Zeeland football games for 40+ years and drove the team bus. The culmination of his athletic career was in 2006 when Dwight was one of the first inductees into the Zeeland Historical Society's Sports Hall of Fame. Dwight founded and operated Wyngarden Print Shop as well as working for Wyngarden Farms and Hatchery. He also owned and operated the Zeeland Pool Hall. He made profession of faith at Second Reformed Church on June 10, 1946 and later served as an elder and a deacon.
Dwight had a passionate love for his summer home on Lake Michigan, the Michigan Wolverines and the Chicago Cubs. On the occasion of Dwight's 95th birthday, WGN Cubs announcer Pat Hughes wished him a Happy Birthday on the air and marveled that Dwight had been a Cub fan for over 80 years!
A service to honor and remember Dwight Wyngarden will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday at Second Reformed Church, 225 E. Central Ave., Zeeland. The Rev. Karsten Voskuil will officiate. Visitation will be 5-8 pm, Wednesday also at Second Reformed Church. Private interment will be in Zeeland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Second Reformed Church Memorial Fund.
