He was an avid sports fan and played football, basketball and baseball for the Chix earning him a baseball tryout with the St Louis Cardinals. During the 1930's and 40's Dwight owned and managed the semiprofessional baseball team, The Zeeland Chix. For 50 years, he served as the official scorekeeper and announcer for Zeeland High boys' basketball games. He also announced Zeeland football games for 40+ years and drove the team bus. The culmination of his athletic career was in 2006 when Dwight was one of the first inductees into the Zeeland Historical Society's Sports Hall of Fame.
